Our Broader Objectives ::
  • To develop a critical mass that understands the role of journalism and encourages the Press to look into all aspects of the problems faced by the contemporary Nepali society.
  • To promote and elevate the standard of journalism by providing qualified journalists with an opportunity to understand and sharpen their craft.
  • To update journalists on contemporary developments in the field of journalism and enable them to apply the knowledge in their profession.
  • To create opportunities for advanced studies and research in Nepalese journalism and mass communication.
  • To provide learning opportunities for foreign students in Nepal.
  • To provide opportunities for students from remote areas and deprived communities.
  • To develop a programme of short courses to allow practicing journalists to update their skills especially in areas of new technology.
  • To make Nepal self-sufficient in skilled manpower in the journalism and communication sector.

Degrees Offerred
At present, we offer the following degrees at CJMC :

A.
Master’s of Arts in Journalism and Mass Communication (4 semesters)
B.
Master’s of Arts in Development Communication (4 semesters)
C.
Bachelor’s of Arts in Journalism and Mass Communication
D.
Joint master’s of Arts in Journalism and Mass Communication in partnership with five other South Asian universities. The principal hosts of the degree are Dhaka University, Bangladesh. The whole programme is funded by the Norwegian government.
The master’s degree courses run for two years, split into four semesters. The first three semesters are devoted to coursework while the fourth semester is allotted to theses, internship and seminars.

Financial Aid and scholarship
The college offers financial aid in the form of assistantships to deserving and the most needy students. The students have to work for the college’s FM station or other departments for these assistantships. These assistantships are however not sufficient to cover the tuition and all living expenses of the students and they are suggested to explore other financial resources. As all the courses are run in the morning shift, students can also do jobs in the day time.

Scholarships are given to two female students from the deprived communities, one from the Terai & one from the hilly region, under the initiative of the college administration. The college provides scholarships to the best students in each semester.
International Students
As the college offers all courses in English, any international student showing proof of command in English language are welcome at CJMC. Kathmandu’s pleasant weather, minimal tuition fees and lower living expenses are some of the attraction for international students at CJMC. Besides, it would be a good on-the-spot platform for international students to explore the trends in journalism, mass communication and other sectors in developing countries like Nepal.
All interested international students are requested to contact at drmanju@wlink.com.np for further information.

Some Second Opinions

“I feel that the College of Journalism and Mass Communication has done a great service for journalism education in this country by initiating the study of journalism at a Master’s level. I consider it a privilege to have been associated with it from the very beginning, albeit in an informal way.”

Mr. Bharat Dutta Koirala, Secretary General of
Ramon Magsaysay Award Winner and retired editor of the Rising Nepal newspaper
